  • Topsoil: This is the top layer of soil that is rich in organic matter and is ideal for planting and landscaping.

  • Fill dirt: This type of dirt is typically used to fill in low-lying areas or to raise the elevation of a construction site. It is often less expensive than topsoil and may contain a higher percentage of clay or rock.

  • Clay: This type of soil has a high percentage of clay particles, which can make it dense and difficult to work with. It is often used for building foundations, but can also be used for landscaping and construction projects that require a stable base.

  • Sand: Sand is a loose, granular soil that is often used as a base for paving projects such as roads and driveways.

  • Gravel: Gravel is a mixture of rock fragments that are used to provide a stable base for construction projects such as foundations, roads, and driveways.

  • Millings: Millings are a recycled asphalt product, which are often used as a base for driveways, walkways, and parking lots.

  • Rock: Rock is a natural material that is used for construction projects such as foundations, retaining walls, and drainage systems. It is often used as a backfill material or to make a drainage layer in construction projects.

  • Mulch: Mulch is a material that is spread over the soil to protect plants and retain moisture. Mulch can be made from a variety of materials such as bark, leaves, and wood chips, but is not considered as dirt.

Note that the type of dirt used for a construction project will depend on the specific needs of the project and the recommendations of the builder or contractor.

How to Measure your Project Area for Stones and Gravel

Measuring your Project Area for Stones & Gravel

How to Measure Your Project Area for Stones & Gravel

 To measure the area for a stone or gravel project, you will first need to determine the length and width of the area you want to cover. Then, multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage of the area. Once you have the square footage, you can use that number to calculate how much stone or gravel you will need. You should also consider the depth of the stone or gravel, as that will affect the total amount needed as well.

For example, if your project area is 10 feet by 20 feet, the total square footage would be 200 square feet. If you want a depth of 2 inches, you would then multiply 200 square feet by .167 (the number of cubic feet in 2 inches) to determine the number of cubic feet of stone or gravel needed for the project.

It's always a good idea to order a little more than what you think you'll need, to account for any mistakes or unexpected changes in the project.

Here is a chart that shows the conversion of cubic feet to inches by 1/2-inch increments:

Inches        Cubic Feet

1/2"      =   0.0104

1"         =    0.0833

1 1/2"   =   0.2083

2"          =   0.3333

2 1/2"   =   0.5208

3"          =   0.6667

3 1/2"   =   0.8611

4           =   1.0000

4 1/2"   =   1.1875

5"          =   1.3333

Please note that these are approximate values and may not be exact. It's  always a good idea to double-check your calculations before ordering  materials.

It is typically lighter and fluffier than regular topsoil,  making it easy for roots to penetrate and grow. Additionally, potting  soil usually has a higher organic matter content and is pre-fertilized  to provide the necessary nutrients for the plants. It is also free from  weed seeds, pathogens and pests, making it a safe and healthy  environment for the plants. It is made from the spent substrate  (materials used to grow mushrooms) after the mushrooms are harvested.  This compost is rich in organic matter, and contains beneficial  microorganisms, and has a high nutrient content, providing plants with  necessary nutrients for growth. It also improves soil structure and  water-holding capacity, making it great for gardening, landscaping and  farming. Mushroom compost is typically dark in color and has a distinct  earthy smell. It is considered a "hot" compost, meaning it can heat up  during the decomposition process, and should be used with caution when  planting seedling or other delicate plants. It can be used as a soil  amendment or as a top dressing for lawns and gardens.

Pine Bark

Pine Bark-Large

 Pine bark - large mulch is a type of mulch that is made from the bark of  pine trees that is shredded or chipped into large pieces. It is usually  a reddish-brown color and has a distinct pine aroma. The large size of  the pieces allows for good drainage and air circulation, making it a  good option for plants that require well-drained soil. It also helps to  suppress weed growth, retain moisture in the soil and provide an  attractive aesthetic to gardens, flower beds, and other landscaped  areas. The bark of the pine tree is known for its natural resistance to  decay and insects, making it a long-lasting option. The large size of  the mulch also makes it less likely to be blown away by wind or washed  away by heavy rain. It can also be used in combination with other types  of mulch, gravels, or pavers to create a more decorative look.

Pine Bark-Mini

 Pine bark - mini mulch is a type of mulch that is made from the bark of  pine trees that is shredded or chipped into small pieces. It has a  reddish-brown color and has a distinct pine aroma. The small size of the  pieces allows for good coverage and helps to suppress weed growth,  retain moisture in the soil and provide an attractive aesthetic to  gardens, flower beds, and other landscaped areas. The bark of the pine  tree is known for its natural resistance to decay and insects, making it  a long-lasting option. The small size of the mulch also makes it less  likely to be blown away by wind and washed away by heavy rain. It can  also be used in combination with other types of mulch, gravels, or  pavers to create a more decorative look. Mini pine bark mulch is also a  great option for garden beds and flower gardens, as it adds a natural  look and complement the plants and flowers.

How to Measure Your Project Area for Mulch

How to Measure Your Project Area for Mulch

How to Measure Your Project Area for Mulch

To measure the area for a mulch project, you will first need to determine the length and width of the area you want to cover. Then, multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage of the area. Once you have the square footage, you can use that number to calculate how much mulch you will need. You should also consider the depth of the mulch, as that will affect the total amount needed as well.

For example, if your project area is 10 feet by 20 feet, the total square footage would be 200 square feet. If you want a depth of 2 inches, you would then multiply 200 square feet by .04167 (the number of cubic feet in 2 inches) to determine the number of cubic feet of mulch needed for the project.

It's always a good idea to order a little more than what you think you'll need, to account for any mistakes or unexpected changes in the project.

When measuring your area, it's important to take into account any curves or irregular shapes in the area. You can use a measuring wheel or a laser measure to get accurate measurements.

Also, different types of mulch have different weight and density, so you should consult with American Landworks to get the accurate information on how much mulch you need for your project.

Here is a chart that shows the conversion of cubic feet to inches by 1/2-inch increments:

Inches        Cubic Feet

1/2"      =   0.0104

1"         =    0.0833

1 1/2"   =   0.2083

2"          =   0.3333

2 1/2"   =   0.5208

3"          =   0.6667

3 1/2"   =   0.8611

4           =   1.0000

4 1/2"   =   1.1875

5"          =   1.3333

Please note that these are approximate values and may not be exact. It's  always a good idea to double-check your calculations before ordering  materials.
