Commercial and Residential St. Augustine Sod Installation

St. Augustine Grass Sod Delivery and Installation

St Augustine grass is one of the most popular warm season turfgrasses. It grows best in coastal climates, and is often installed as sod in areas with plenty of direct sunlight. Sod is freshly cut from a St Augustine sod farm and consists of mature grass, roots, soil, and even some weed seed. Installing sod allows for immediate aesthetic impact since it provides an instant lawn.

When installing St Augustine sod it should ideally be done during the spring or summer months when temperatures are warmer, allowing for faster root development and establishment. Planting should take place on well-draining, fertile soils that have been amended with compost or other organic material to improve water retention and nutrients available to the newly planted grass. After installation, the sod should be watered immediately and then twice daily for the first two weeks. During this time, the soil below the sod should remain moist but not overly saturated. As the St Augustine grass begins to settle into its new environment it will need a regular watering schedule to keep it healthy and green.

It is important to maintain a consistent mowing schedule with St Augustine grass in order to keep it looking neat and even. The lawn should be mowed at least once every five days during peak growing season, shortening that interval if needed. Proper fertilization of St Augustine grass will help promote growth, strengthen the root system, and reduce weed pressure. Fertilizer applications should occur 3-4 times per year and include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Overall, St Augustine grass is an attractive option for homeowners looking to create a lush green lawn with minimal maintenance.  With the right care and attention, it can remain healthy and beautiful for years to come.

Measure Area for St Augustine Sod using measuring wheel or measuring tape. Calculate Square Footage

How to Measure the Area for your New St Augustine Grass

To measure your yard for St Augustine sod, you will need to determine the length and  width of the area you want to cover. You can use a measuring tape or a  measuring wheel to get the measurements. Once you have the length and  width, multiply them together to get the total square footage of the  area. This will give you an estimate of how much St Augustine sod you will need to  purchase. It is also important to consider any irregular shapes or  angles in the area, as they will require additional calculations to  determine the correct amount of St Augustine sod needed. It is also recommended to  add an extra 10-15% to account for any cuts or waste.

Let's say you have a rectangular shaped yard that is 60 feet long and 40 feet wide. To determine the square footage of the area, you would multiply the length (60) by the width (40):

60 x 40 = 2,400 square feet

So in this example, you would need to purchase approximately 2,400 square feet of St Augustine sod to cover the entire yard. However, it's always a good idea to add an extra 10-15% to account for any cuts or waste. so you would need to purchase around 2,640 - 2,760 square feet of St Augustine sod.

It's also important to note that in case if you have any irregular shapes or angles in your yard, you should measure these areas separately and then add it to the total square footage.

Water the soil thoroughly

  • Before installing the St Augustine sod, water the soil thoroughly to a depth of at least 6 inches. This will help the roots of the sod establish more effectively.

  • You can use a hose and nozzle, sprinkler, or irrigation system to water the soil. Be sure to water the soil uniformly to ensure that the entire area is hydrated.

  • It's important to water the soil to a depth of 6 inches because the roots of the new St Augustine sod need to reach that depth to establish effectively.

  • After installation, water the new St Augustine sod immediately and keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks.

  • For the first two weeks, water the new St Augustine sod at least twice a day, in the morning and evening, or as often as necessary to keep the soil consistently moist.

  • After the first two weeks, reduce the frequency of watering to once a day.

  • Gradually reduce the frequency of watering over the next few weeks, until you reach a watering schedule that's appropriate for your area's climate and weather conditions.

  • Be sure to keep an eye on the new St Augustine sod and water it as needed to prevent it from drying out.

Note: The watering schedule may vary depending on the location, climate, and other factors specific to your area. It is always best to check the American Landworks for information about the condition of sod farm for the best results.

Laying new St Augustine Sod

  • Start by laying the first row of sod along one edge of the prepared area, making sure the edges of the sod are tight against each other.

  • Continue laying rows of sod, making sure the edges of each piece of sod are tightly butted against the edges of the previous piece.

  • As you lay each piece of sod, stagger the joints, like laying bricks in a brick wall pattern, so that the joints in one row are not lined up with the joints in the next row. This will help prevent gaps from forming between the pieces of sod.

  • Use a sharp knife or sod cutter to trim the edges of the sod as needed, to fit around curves or corners.

  • Make sure to adjust the sod as you go, to ensure that it is level and that there are no gaps between the pieces.

  • Once all the sod is laid, use a lawn roller or your feet to press the sod down firmly into the soil, to ensure good contact between the roots and the soil.

  • Water the sod immediately after installation, to ensure that the soil is moist at least 6 inches deep.

American Landworks Professional landscapers have the experience and equipment  necessary to properly prepare the soil, lay the sod, and ensure that it  is properly hydrated and cared for after installation.

We can also  help with any additional landscaping needs you may have.  American Landworks are experienced and  efficient, we can save you time and ensure that your new St. Augustine  sod is installed correctly for optimal growth and beauty.

  • Begin at one end of the sod and roll it in a back-and-forth motion, making sure to cover the entire area.

  • The roller should be filled with water, to add weight and help press the sod down firmly.

  • Be sure to roll the sod evenly, to ensure that there are no air pockets between the sod and the soil.

  • Once all the new St Augustine sod is rolled, water the area immediately to ensure that the soil is moist at least 6 inches deep.

  • Repeat the process in case of any air pockets appear

Mowing is an important part of caring for newly installed St. Augustine sod. Here are a few tips for mowing new St. Augustine sod:

  • Timing: Wait until the sod has grown to a height of 3-4 inches before mowing. This will allow the roots to establish properly before the first mowing.

  • Mower setting: Use a sharp lawn mower set at the highest setting to avoid scalping the grass. It is important to not cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time.

  • Mowing frequency: Mow regularly to keep the grass at a consistent height. The frequency will depend on the rate of growth, which can vary depending on factors such as temperature, rainfall, and fertilization.

  • Grass clippings: Leave the grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. They will decompose quickly and provide additional nutrients to the soil.

  • Avoid mowing when the grass is wet: Wait until the grass is dry before mowing to prevent the mower from clogging and to avoid the risk of disease.

  • Watch out for pests: Keep an eye out for pests and diseases that can be spread by mowing and address them promptly.

  • Gradually lower the mower setting: Gradually lower the mower setting over the course of the first growing season. This will help to toughen up the grass and prepare it for the next growing season.

Fertilizing newly installed St. Augustine sod is important to promote healthy growth and establishment. Here are a few tips for fertilizing new St. Augustine sod:

  • Timing: Fertilize the sod after it has been installed, and then every 6-8 weeks.

  • Type of fertilizer: Use a slow-release fertilizer specifically formulated for St. Augustine grass. This will provide a steady supply of nutrients to the grass over time.

  • Application: Apply the fertilizer evenly over the entire area, following the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended rate of application.

  • Watering: Water the fertilizer into the soil immediately after application to ensure that it reaches the roots.

  • Avoid over-fertilizing: Over-fertilizing can lead to lush, thick growth that can create an ideal environment for pests and diseases. Use a slow-release fertilizer and follow the instructions on the package.

  • Consider soil test: Consider having a soil test done to determine the specific fertilizer needs of your soil and sod.

  • Stop fertilizing before winter: Stop fertilizing at least 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost date to allow the grass to harden off for winter.

Note: The fertilizing schedule may vary depending on the location, climate, and other factors specific to your area.

Keep an eye out for weeds and remove them promptly. Use a preemergent weed control product to prevent weeds from taking root.

Weed control is important for newly installed St. Augustine sod to ensure that the grass establishes properly and grows healthy. Here are a few tips for weed control in newly installed St. Augustine sod:

  • Preemergent weed control: Apply a preemergent weed control product to the soil before installing the sod. This will prevent weed seeds from germinating and taking root in the new sod. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product for the best results.

  • Hand-pulling: Remove any weeds that do appear by hand-pulling them as soon as you see them. Be sure to remove the entire root to prevent them from regrowing.

  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch on top of the soil after installing the sod. This will help to prevent light from reaching weed seeds and will also keep the soil moist.

  • Mowing: Mow the sod regularly to keep the grass at a consistent height. This will help to shade out any weed seedlings that do appear.

  • Avoid over-fertilizing: Over-fertilizing can lead to lush, thick growth that can create an ideal environment for weeds. Use a slow-release fertilizer and follow the instructions on the package.

  • Use selective herbicide: If you have persistent weed problem, use a selective herbicide that is labeled for use on St. Augustine grass, and be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
